Matt was asked to design a new tuning for a customer. He worked with it until he came up with something quite extraordinary-- a distinctive Middle Eastern sound. Everyone who hears it wants one. The flute not only has a new tuning but also a new shape and a new fingering.. It features a flat-bottomed block (groove in flute) .  Just as with the pentatonic flute the notes of this flute all harmonize with each other in a mysterious sounding Middle Eastern sort of way.

Wood Choice and "Voice"

*THE BIG QUESTION*

The question we hear the most is, "Does the choice of wood affect the flute's voice?" The answer is yes...in a subtle and hard to describe way. The soft woods like Western Red Cedar have a mellow, hazy sound and the hard woods like Cherry and Walnut have a clean sound. Also, it's usually possible to get more volume from a hardwood flute. But these distinctions are subjective. One thing we can say with certainty is that the differences are very minor. Maybe the most important reason to buy a flute of a certain wood is because you like the way it looks!
