Amazing Grace is almost certainly the most spiritually moving melody ever created. There was a PBS television special with Bill Moyers a couple of years ago devoted to making this point. A song of both sadness and joy, it was sung repeatedly on the Trail of Tears, and through the years these moving sounds have risen from many a Native American flute.

Amazing Grace can be played easily on a flute tuned to feature the major scale, but it can also be played on a traditional six hole flute which features the minor scale if you learn the technique of half holing. It takes a bit of practice to play the one interval in Amazing Grace which requires half holing. You have to hit it just right and it may work a little differently from flute to flute. Here is the fingering chart on a Native American flute by Stellar. It works the same on most of the six hole flutes we have played. Give it try ... play the beautiful and majestic Amazing Grace on a
Native American Flute!

Below, you will find a flute sample of Amazing Grace, played by Charles Littleleaf, offering another approach to the technique of improvising on the second to the last note. Here, instead, he plays the last note twice, implementing a "popping effect", rather than using the half holing technique. This is just another way of improvising, but sounds truly beautiful!
